Mini or Full Photo Session? Discover the Right Fit for Your Needs

If you’re wondering whether to go for a full portrait session or a mini session, you’re definitely not alone! I get asked this all the time: ‘But Michole, which one’s the best for my family?’ Honestly, the answer can vary from family to family and even year to year as your kids grow and their needs (and attention spans!) change.

To help make your decision easier, here’s a quick breakdown of full sessions vs. mini sessions, along with the perks of each, so you can choose what works best for your family’s vibe and needs.

Mini-session pace

Because mini-sessions are so short and sweet, the photographer is often working faster with you and your kids to get the images needed for your gallery. If you prefer a more laid-back approach, or if you have a child that is very shy and slow to warm, a mini-session may not be for you.

You know your kiddos best, and some little rugrats can truly ONLY hang for 20 minutes and then they are past the point of no return. I TOTALLY understand! If you know your kid is a total ham right out of the gate, mini sessions absolutely may be your best bet.

Mini-session length

One main difference is mini-session length. Mini-sessions are typically 15-20 minutes long without any breaks. I see the main purpose of a mini-session is to get a quick set of updated photos of the family, perfect for holiday cards and photo gifts for your loved ones. The style leans more towards candid sessions vs. more portrait with a mix of candid sessions.

Mini-Session locations

Mini-session locations are typically chosen by the photographer, whereas full custom sessions are chosen by the client. A photographer may offer several different days and locations for mini-sessions that you can choose from, and other photographers may only offer one round of minis per year in one location.

full session advantages

More time means a more relaxed session .Having more time makes the session feel more relaxed and fun! If your little ones are full of energy or a bit shy and need a little extra time to warm up to new faces and places, a longer session is the way to go. We’ll have plenty of time to explore, play games, shake off the wiggles, and capture those sweet, natural smiles along the way!

A more diverse gallery

If you love capturing those sweet, candid moments, a full session is perfect for you! We’ll have plenty of time to grab those classic ‘look-here-and-smile’ shots that are always a hit on holiday cards, and still have space to get creative and artistic with your photos. Plus, you'll be able to stroll around your portrait location, letting us explore different backdrops for a beautifully diverse final gallery.

No matter which session you choose, we are going to make some beautiful images of your family and you’ll leave with a treasured collection of memories and cannot wait to work with you!
